My work can be described as 50/50. Half of my time I work on faculty type activities including teaching, service, and scholarship, with the bulk of that time dedicated to teaching. Half of my job is administrative. I serve as the department chair and more recently assumed the role of assistant dean within the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Here my primary functions focus on leading curricular improvements and supporting student progress. I have a great deal of variety in my day-to-day work, and the Pharmacology Graduate Program prepared me very well to be in my current position.

Dr. Ruben Dagda investigates mechanisms that lead to neurodegeneration in cell culture, tissue and animal models of Parkinson's disease. He has authored over 59 manuscripts and review articles in the areas of toxicology, mitochondrial biology, and neuroscience. He is also committed to the training and education of undergraduate, graduate students and postdocs in his lab. In 2023, he was selected to be the graduate director of the Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology program at UNR.

Don’t be afraid to stand on the shoulders of giants. You never stop learning and growing. Ask for advice throughout the graduate and postdoctoral phases of your career. My mentors were very helpful in helping me become a well-rounded scientist.

It’s not easy being a graduate student; some days can be tough. My lab is just getting started, so each day looks different. I still spend a lot of time in the lab doing experiments with trainees, but I also spend time on administrative duties and developing the future research program of the lab.
